Kernels fall to LumberKings in extra innings, 7-6

April 6, 2008 – The Cedar Rapids Kernels never trailed against the Clinton LumberKings on Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton until a sacrifice fly by Tim Smith in the bottom of the 12^th inning scored Engel Beltre from third to give Clinton a 7-6 extra inning win.

Kernel reliver Sammy Leon (0-1) took the loss with Clinton reliver Adalberto Flores (1-0) picking up the win.

The Kernels took an early 5-2 lead as Jay Brossman hit a two run HR and RBI by Gordie Gronkowski, Tyler Johnson and Anel De Los Santos. But the LumberKings tied the game on a Beltre triple and Ian Gac’s fourth HR of the series.

Jeremy Moore tripled home Andrew Romine in the top of the eighth to give the Kernels a 6-5 lead, but in the bottom of the inning, a passed ball by De Los Santos let Clinton score the tying run and send the game into extra innings.

Kernels starter Michael Anton allowed four runs and nine hits over five innings of work in a no-decision effort. Clinton starter Kennil Gomez also didn’t finish in the final decision as he allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits over five innings.

Brossman and Johnson each had two hits for the Kernels, who had 10 hits total on the day. The loss is the Kernels third in a row in the young season and also the third loss by one run.

The Kernels open the 2008 home season on Monday, April 7^th against the Quad City River Bandits. Game time is noon from Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the gates opening at 11 am.
