Tobin spins a gem as Kernels blank River Bandits, 2-0

April 9, 2008 – The 2008 Kernels were expected to be loaded with pitching and that point was driven home as Cedar Rapids starter Mason Tobin pitched a complete game, three hit shutout as the Kernels beat Quad Cities, 2-0, in game one of a doubleheader at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Tobin (0-1) made his first start of the year and struck out four over seven innings to notch the Kernels second complete game this season.

Jay Brossman extended his hitting streak to six games, going 2 for 3 with a double and RBI. Chris Rosenbaum was 2 for 3 with two doubles and Tyler Johnson drove in a run on a sac fly.

Quad Cities starter J.D. Stambaugh (1-1) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out two over four innings to take the loss.

The win snaps the Kernels four game losing streak and improves their first half record to 2-4. Quad Cities falls to 3-3.

The Kernels and River Bandits play the nightcap starting at 6:30 pm, as Robert Fish starts for Cedar Rapids against Sean Garceau for Quad Cities.
