Kernels avoid sweep, beat Dayton 7-2

April 23, 2008 – The Cedar Rapids Kernels ended a six game road trip with a 7-2 win over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field in Dayton on Wednesday night. The Kernels finished the road trip with a 4-2 record and improved their overall record to 10-9.

Clay Fuller was 2 for 5 with 2 RBI and Anel De Los Santos was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Kernel offense. The Kernels tied a season high by drawing seven walks from Dayton pitchers, but stranded 10 men on base.

Andrew Romine and Jerry Gonzalez were both 2 for 4 and Tyler Johnson scored three runs. Romine also had three stolen bases and take over the team lead with 11 on the season.

Michael Anton (2-1) picked up his second win as a Kernel, allowing a run on four hits and striking out seven over 5.2 innings. Sammy Leon, Ysmael Carmona and Ryan Brasier combined to allow a run on three hits and strike out five over the final 3.1 innings to preserve the win.

Dayton starter Curtis Partch (0-3) allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits, struck out four and walked five over 4.2 innings to take the loss.

After an off day on Thursday, the Kernels return home to Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium and open a three game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps on Friday, April 25 at 6:30 pm. Game times on Saturday and Sunday are 2 pm with the gates opening at 1 pm.
