Bell dominates and donates as Johnson homers twice
in Kernels 6-2 win over Wisconsin

June 24, 2008 – After a marathon 15-inning loss to Wisconsin last night, the Cedar Rapids Kernels came back on the arm of Trevor Bell and the bat of Tyler Johnson and defeated the Timber Rattler, 6-2, in front of 3,021 fans on Tuesday afternoon at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Bell (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out seven for his first win since joining the Kernels from Rancho Cucamonga on June 12. Before the game, Bell agreed to donate $100 for every strikeout he threw in today’s game towards local flood relief efforts and with his seven strikeouts in the game, he will make a donation of $700 towards local flood relief.

Efren Navarro was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI and Jay Brossman was 3 for 4 with a double as the Kernels pounded out 10 hits in the game. Andrew Romine and Anel De Los Santos each had an RBI and Romine stole his league-leading 31^st base of the season.

Johnson hit his first home run over the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion in left field in the sixth inning and hit a long solo shot into the batter’s eye in deep center field to lead off the eighth. The two home runs by Johnson is the first time this season a Kernel has hit more than one HR in a game.

Game three of this for game set between the Kernels and Timber Rattlers is set for 7 pm on Wednesday night. It’s a Z 102.9 Wii Wednesday. Register at the Z table on the concourse for a chance to play Wii games on the Rockwell Collins GameLink before the game and regular hot dogs are just $1 all game. And, the first 250 fans through the gates when the open at 6 pm, receive a free sample bag of Popcorn Indiana popcorn.
